Australia a "preferred candidate" to host 2027 Rugby World Cup

CANBERRA, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Australia is set to host the 2027 Rugby World Cup after being awarded preferred candidate status by the governing body.
World Rugby announced that Australia's bid to host the tournament has been awarded "preferred candidate" status.
It means that Rugby Australia (RA) will work in an exclusive partnership with World Rugby to develop the tournament model ahead of the official vote in May.
"This is a huge step forward in our ambitions to host Rugby World Cup 2027 and for rebooting the game in Australia," RA chairman Hamish McLennan said in a statement.
"The team at Rugby Australia have worked hard on this for a number of years and today's announcement is a great reward for those efforts.
It will be the first time Australia has hosted the Rugby World Cup since 2003 when the Wallabies were beaten in the final by England.
Australia is now set to host three major international sports events within 10 years, with the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2023 and the 2032 Olympics already locked in.
The U.S. was considered Australia's biggest rival for 2027 hosting rights but will instead receive "exclusive targeted dialogue" to host the tournament in 2031.
RA's bid estimated that 200,000 international fans will travel to Australia for the World Cup, delivering a 2.5 billion Australian dollar (1.7 billion U.S. dollar) economic benefit. Enditem
