MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Eight people have been arrested over the abduction and murder of a known doctor in the northern Balkh province, a provincial police official said Thursday.

"After tireless efforts, the security forces of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan arrested eight individuals involved in kidnapping and killing of Dr. Nader Alemi, a well-known physiographist and neurologist, in Mazar-i-Sharif, capital of Balkh," Qari Abdul Hay Abed, deputy chief of the provincial police, told Xinhua.

The arrested eight people have confessed they killed the doctor, said Abed, adding that the security forces have also seized cash and firearms from them.

The doctor was abducted nearly two months ago and his body was found on Nov. 18.

More than 80 kidnapers have been arrested and 12 kidnapped people rescued since the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in mid-August, according to official sources of Afghanistan's caretaker government. Enditem
