DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The East African Community (EAC) on Wednesday launched the EAC regional and domestic tourism media campaign aimed at publicizing national and regional tourism products and services to stimulate intra-regional travel.

A statement issued on Wednesday night by the EAC headquarters in Tanzania's northern city of Arusha said the campaign seeks to entice East Africans to travel in their specific countries and around the region to revive domestic and regional tourism across the region, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The campaign is set to run for three weeks starting from Dec. 1, 2021, said the statement, adding that the campaign is part of implementation of the EAC Tourism Marketing Strategy and EAC Recovery Plan supported by German Development Agency, GIZ.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected the tourism sector negatively with international tourism arrivals in East Africa dropping by about 67.7 percent to an estimated 2.25 million arrivals in 2020 compared to 6.98 million arrivals in 2019, said the statement.

Peter Mathuki, the EAC secretary general, urged private sector players in the tourism sector to extend affordable packages to East Africans so as to entice them into taking advantage of the holiday offers available during the upcoming festive season. Enditem
