African countries acquire over 400 mln doses of COVID-19 vaccines: Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Some 54 African countries have acquired about 403 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines so far, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said on Thursday.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union, said in a weekly update that around 6.66 percent of Africa's population have been fully vaccinated.

Some 221.7 million of the total 403 million COVID-19 vaccine doses available have been administered so far, it was noted.

Five countries, namely Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Algeria and Tunisia have acquired and administered the most doses of COVID-19 vaccines to their respective populations, according to the agency.

As of Thursday afternoon, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa had reached 8,614,525 with 222,254 deaths and 8,060,459 recoveries, according to the agency.

South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia and Ethiopia are among the countries with the most cases in the continent, according to the agency. Enditem
