ALGIERS -- The local elections in Algeria began on Saturday as some 23 million Algerians are expected to elect their representatives in 1,541 municipal and 58 prefect assemblies for a five-year term.

The elections are the last step in the process of renewing the state institutions since President Abdelmadjid Tebboune came to power in late 2019 in place of late Abdelaziz Bouteflika who had been forced to step down following a popular movement calling for change. (Algeria-Local Elections)

LUXOR, Egypt-- The Karnak Temple Complex in Upper Egypt's monument-rich city of Luxor is buzzing with tourists, as the North African country has witnessed a revival in tourism after a long recession amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

This bustle and hustle around the temple and other archaeological sites in Luxor was more palpable especially when and after Egypt reopened the city's ancient Avenue of Sphinxes on Friday after years of renovation work. (Egypt-Luxor-Tourism)

CAIRO -- The Egyptian government suspended direct flights with a number of southern African countries due to concerns over the new COVID-19 variant Omicron.

The decision was made late on Friday after a meeting of the ministerial crisis management committee headed by Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, according to a cabinet statement. (Egypt-Flight Suspension-COVID19)

JERUSALEM -- Israel on Saturday issued a ban on its citizens traveling to 50 African countries to prevent the spread of the new COVID-19 variant Omicron, the Israeli health ministry said in a statement.

On Thursday, Israel labeled seven African countries as "red countries," banning travel to them, and now added 43 more countries on the continent to the list. (Israel-Flight Suspension-COVID19) Enditem
