BAGHDAD, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced Tuesday the final results of the parliamentary elections that took place on Oct. 10, with no significant changes in the number of seats obtained by the competing political parties.

According to the final results, the Sadrist Movement appeared in the lead with 73 seats, the Sunni alliance known as Taqaddum, or progress, headed by outgoing parliament speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, came in the second place with 37 seats.

The State of Law Coalition, headed by former prime minister Nuri al-Maliki, came third with 33 seats, while the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), headed by the Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, came in the fourth place with 31 seats.

Among others, the results showed the al-Fateh Coalition (Conquest), which includes some Iranian-backed Shiite militias of Hashd Shaabi, garnered 17 seats, retreating from 47 seats in the past 2018 elections.

The Imtidad Movement, of which the members were part of the 2019 massive protests against corruption and mismanagement won about nine seats.

Some political parties unsatisfied with the results said the elections were manipulated and that they would not accept the "fabricated results."

Followers of the political parties rejecting the election results took to the streets in many Iraqi cities, including the capital Baghdad.

The Iraqi parliamentary elections, originally scheduled for 2022, were held in advance in response to months of protests against corruption, poor governance, and a lack of public services.

A total of 3,249 candidates within 167 parties and coalitions competed for 329 parliamentary seats. Enditem
