BEIRUT, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon launched on Wednesday a platform allowing 500,000 vulnerable families to register for ration cards amid the current economic crisis, the National News Agency reported.

Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati said at a ceremony held at the Grand Serail that the cards aim at alleviating people's suffering with funding from the World Bank and the United Nations, and under the supervision of the Lebanese parliament.

The registration on the platform will start right away, and cash payments will begin to be disbursed as of January 2022, he said.

According to the government's plan, Lebanese families would receive a monthly base payment of 25 U.S. dollars, and an additional 15 dollars per family member for up to six family members, as well as another 11 dollars a month if at least one family member is aged 75 or older. Each family can receive a maximum of 126 dollars a month.

Lebanon has been facing the worst financial crisis in its history with the poverty rate hovering over 78 percent according to the United Nations. Enditem
