BEIRUT, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon established on Friday the Union of Lebanese-Gulf Businessmen Councils aimed at deepening the ties between Lebanon and the Gulf counties, the Lebanese National News Agency reported.

The initiative seeks to strengthen the cooperation and partnership between private sectors in Lebanon and the Gulf region, and protect their economic interests, announced Mohammad Choucair, head of Beirut's Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture.

Samir el-Khatib, head of the union, highlighted the importance of protecting Lebanon's ties with the Gulf countries.

"The union will always confront all attempts to undermine Lebanon's relations with brotherly countries in a bid to defend the country's identity and the interests of the Lebanese population," he said.

The establishment of the councils came about one month after a diplomatic row between Lebanon and Saudi Arabia over comments made by Lebanese former Information Minister George Kordahi criticizing the kingdom for its war in Yemen. Kordahi submitted his resignation on Friday. Enditem
