RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Former Juventus midfielder Felipe Melo has parted ways with Palmeiras, a week after helping the Brazilian giants to their second consecutive Copa Libertadores title.

In a statement, the Sao Paulo club said it opted not to renew the 38-year-old's existing contract, which is due to expire on December 31.

"[Felipe's] departure does not mark the end of his career at Palmeiras, but the beginning of eternity," the statement read. "He has risen to football's highest echelon, to be marked forever on the club's walls and in the memories of fans.

Melo, who has been capped 22 times for Brazil's national team, made 168 first-team appearances for Palmeiras after joining the club from Inter Milan in 2017.

He played an important role in the club's 2020 Copa Libertadores triumph but was mostly used as a bit-part player in this year's campaign, which culminated with a 2-1 win over Flamengo in last Saturday's final in Montevideo.

According to Brazilian media reports, Melo has received offers to continue his career with Brazilian clubs Fluminense and Internacional. Enditem
