U.S. dollar rises as traders monitor Omicron variant

NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar strengthened in late trading on Monday as market participants are assessing the impact of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, increased 0.23 percent at 96.3361.

In late New York trading, the euro decreased to 1.1277 U.S. dollars from 1.1312 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound increased to 1.3257 dollars from 1.3230 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar rose to 0.7041 U.S. dollar from 0.6997 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 113.49 Japanese yen, higher than 112.62 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar increased to 0.9261 Swiss franc from 0.9175 Swiss franc, and it decreased to 1.2770 Canadian dollars from 1.2834 Canadian dollars.

The above market reactions came as health officials said on Sunday that the Omicron variant has been detected in almost one third of U.S. states. Enditem
