YAOUNDE, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Gunmen have abducted a prominent traditional leader in Cameroon's troubled Anglophone region of Northwest, local authorities said on Wednesday.

Fon Kevin Shumitang II, President of the Northwest House of Chiefs and Vice President of the Northwest regional council was kidnapped in his palace in Bambalang village of the region Tuesday night, according to villagers and notables of the village.

He was communing with his people in the palace when heavily armed men arrived and took him to an unknown destination.

The army said its troops have launched a search and rescue mission in the locality where armed separatists who want to create an independent nation in Cameroon's two English-speaking regions regularly operate.

Shumitang II was elected last year during Cameroon's first-ever regional elections. Enditem
