CAIRO, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Egypt has retrieved from Spain 36 pieces of antiquities that were smuggled out in 2014, the Egyptian Public Prosecution announced on Monday.

A delegation from the Egyptian Public Prosecution, accompanied by the Egyptian ambassador to Spain, received the artifacts from the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid, capital of Spain, according to an official statement.

The delegation will handle the packaging and shipment of the recovered artifacts to Egypt in preparation for their delivery to Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the statement said.

The antiquities were smuggled into Spain in 2014, when the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was notified by Spanish authorities that 36 Egyptian artifacts from Alexandria had been seized at the Spanish port of Valencia, according to the statement. Enditem
