BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Brunei reported 341 cases of Delta variant and nine cases of Omicron variant from Nov. 22, 2021 to Jan. 4, 2022, the country's health ministry said on Wednesday.

According to the health ministry, the gene sequencing method was performed on 350 samples from positive cases detected in Brunei, where 341 of them were found to be linked to the Delta variant while nine samples were confirmed as the Omicron variant.

"So far, all Omicron variant cases detected in the country are cases imported from abroad while the Delta variant cases are comprised of local and foreign cases," the health ministry said in a statement.

The ministry also informed the public that reservations for the third dose vaccination or booster dose through the BruHealth, a local mobile health application co-developed by a Chinese company, will reopen on Jan. 6, 2022.

Meanwhile, the third shots on walk-in basis, which started on Dec. 17, 2021, are still available but limited to the elderly, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers and differently-abled individuals.

COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and China's Sinopharm are administered in the country.

During the first phase of Brunei's COVID-19 National Vaccination Program that began in April, 2021, frontliners were administered mostly with Sinopharm vaccine for its earlier arrival and a shorter interval between two doses.

As of Jan. 4, 2022, 94.6 percent of Brunei's population had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccines, while 93.5 percent had completed their vaccination schedule of two doses and 23.8 percent had received three doses.

The country reported 16 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, including 15 local infections and one imported case, bringing the total tally to 15,532.

A total of 100 active cases are still being treated and monitored in Brunei and 101 patients have died in the country. Enditem
