Hungary names Athletes of the Year 2021 awards

BUDAPEST, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Three-time Olympic fencing champion Aron Szilagyi and Olympic kayak champion Tamara Csipes were chosen as Hungarian Athletes of the Year 2021 by the Association of Hungarian Sports Journalists on Thursday night.

"2021 was a great year, especially for me. I believe it was also a great year for Hungarian sports as well. I wish you all similarly beautiful or even greater success in 2022," Szilagyi said after he won the vote.

Csipes, 32, won the female athlete of the year award to wrap up her 2021 when she took the Tokyo Olympic gold with her teammates in Kayak Four 500m and an individual silver in kayak single 500.

The winners of the 64th annual voting were announced at the M4 Sport-Athlete of the Year Gala at the National Theater. The award ceremony was held with spectators despite the COVID-19 epidemic.

The Best Traditional Hungarian Sports Team was awarded to the women's water polo team, bronze medalist in the Tokyo Olympic Games, and the women's kayak quartet composed by Danuta Kozak, Anna Carpes, Anna Karasz and Dora Bodonyi won in the category of "Team Competitions in Individual Sports".

Among the coaches, Andras Decsi, the trainer of Szilagyi and the head coach of the Hungarian men's sabre team, received the most votes.

Canoeist Peter Pal Kiss has been elected as Disabled Male Athlete of the Year, and swimmer Bianka Pap was elected as Disabled Female Athlete of the Year.

The Disabled Team of the Year was the women's wheelchair fencing team, composed of Eva Hajmasi, Zsuzsanna Krajnyak, Boglarka Madaraszne Mezo, Gyongyi Dani and Amarilla Veres.

The Hungarian sports journalists also elected the Athlete of the Year in E-sports: Patrik Blazsan. Enditem
