KINSHASA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on Tuesday dispatched an inter-ministerial delegation to Goma, the capital of the northeastern North Kivu province, following intense activity in recent days in the crater of Mount Nyiragongo, which erupted in May 2021.

At the end of a meeting held Tuesday with the provincial authorities as well as the leaders of the Goma Volcanological Observatory (OVG), the head of the delegation, DRC's state minister Aime Boji called on the people not to panic, as precautions are undertaken by the government.

"In case there is a new volcanic eruption, we are better prepared and better equipped to protect our people. We remain in serenity," said Aime Boji. Before returning to Kinshasa, the capital of DRC, the members of the delegation visited the new OVG laboratory and the volcano monitoring station where some OVG equipment is installed in the territory of Nyiragongo.

The city of Goma is home to two active volcanoes, Nyamulagira and Nyiragongo. The Nyiragongo volcano erupted on May 22, 2021, killing at least 32 people.

The OVG last week announced that it had recorded "intense activity" of the still active Nyiragongo volcano. "In addition to the activities in the central crater of Nyiragongo, there is (an) intense activity of volcanic tremors (continuous vibrations) on the southern flank of this volcano," OVG director Professor Adalbert Muhindo said in a statement.
