BISSAU, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday detected first cases of the Omicron and Gamma variants, a health official said.

"The discovery of these variants was based on the samples that were taken, while we also identified other variants that already existed such as Delta," said Placido Cardoso, secretary of the High Commission for the fight against COVID-19.

Warning that the two new variants identified on the territory may spread quickly, Cardoso urged people to receive vaccines in order to better protect themselves.

The country saw a spike in COVID-19 cases last week, with 214 new cases registered on Jan. 3-9, compared with a mere 30 cases reported in the last week of 2021. Enditem
