KABUL, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Afghan police in a crackdown on kidnappers have rescued a physician and arrested eight people charged with involvement in the abduction, Spokesman for the Taliban-run caretaker government Zabihullah Mujahid said Saturday.

"Medical practitioner Najibullah Sakandar who was abducted a few days ago from Kabul was found and rescued from the kidnappers' clutch late Friday," Mujahid said on social media.

Police have arrested the eight people in connection with the abduction of the physician, the official added in his message.

Kidnappers in the northern Mazar-i-Sharif city killed a physician after his family failed to pay 800,000 U.S. dollars in ransom for his release a couple of months ago.

The Taliban-run administration has vowed to crack down on the outlaws to ensure law and order in the war-torn Afghanistan. Enditem
