MADRID, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- FC Barcelona's hopes for the season took a big blow as the reigning Copa del Rey holders were knocked out of the tournament in a thrilling 120 minutes away to Athletic Club Bilbao on Thursday night.

To make it worse, the game left coach Xavi Hernandez with an injury headache as both midfielder Pedri and forward Ansu Fati were forced to limp out through injury.

Both players were making just their second appearances after a season of injury problems and Fati left the pitch almost in tears after suffering a torn hamstring in the 96th minute of the game after coming on as a second half substitute.

He now looks likely to spend at least a month, and probably twice that period on the sidelines.

The young forward missed most of last season after four knee operations and although he was finally able to return in November, another hamstring injury sidelined him for a further two months. He only returned to action as a substitute in Barca's Supercup defeat against Real Madrid eight days ago.

Pedri also returned in the Supercup after struggling with a string of injuries this campaign. The 18-year-old is paying the price for playing over 70 matches last season which ended with him participating in the European Championship and the Olympic Games.

He signaled for a change at the end of the first period of extra-time on Thursday and although his injury appears less severe than Fati's, he looks likely to be out for at least a fortnight.

The effects of these injuries are worsened by the fact that Barca stated on Thursday that they want winger Ousmane Dembele to leave the club before the end of the January transfer window, meaning the winger will not be considered for selection due to what the club views as his lack of commitment.
