RIGA, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Latvia's health authorities reported 5,972 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, the third 24-hour record registered this week.

The country's cumulative two-week COVID-19 incidence rate, now driven by the Omicron variant, rose from 1,895.1 cases per 100,000 residents to 2,111.4 over the past 24 hours.

While Latvia's COVID-19 incidence rate is still below the average in the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA), its coronavirus-related death rate is higher.

For the period between Jan. 3 and Jan. 16, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported 87.5 deaths per one million Latvian residents, making it the seventh highest COVID-19 mortality rate in the EU/EEA. In said period, the average rate in the EU/EEA was 48.5 deaths per one million residents. Enditem
