THE HAGUE, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Daily COVID-19 infections in the Netherlands hit a new record of 57,549 over the past 24 hours, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) announced on Friday.
Driven by the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, the daily number from Thursday to Friday was 17,591 more than the previous day. On average, the number of positive COVID-19 tests also increased, to an average of 39,679 positive tests per day in the past seven days, 27 percent more than the seven days before.
The RIVM recorded 12 deceased COVID-19 patients on Friday and an average of eight deaths per day over the past seven days, compared to 11 deaths a day one week earlier.
The occupancy in the hospitals continued to decline. There are now 1,108 people with COVID-19 in hospital, compared to 1,124 on Thursday, of whom 287 are in ICU, compared to 290 on Thursday. Enditem
