KAMPALA, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has provided 450 climate resilient emergency tents to districts in Uganda where school structures have been affected by floods and the COVID-19 pandemic, the agency said in a statement Thursday.

The tents will support the reopening program after schools were closed for 83 weeks as the country has been striving to control the devastating impact of the pandemic, which was compounded by heavy flooding in some parts of the country.

"For nearly two years, children across the country have suffered prolonged pandemic-related school closures, combined with extreme weather events that have destroyed schools across the country," said Munir Safieldin, the UNICEF representative in Uganda.

"The new tents will provide safe environments for children in disaster-affected areas, ensuring they continue to learn, play and interact," Safieldin said.

According to the statement, the 72-square-meter tent can be easily transported and reused. Ventilation system and elevated shade net in the tent keep internal temperature cooler in hot and dry climate. It also has electrical and solar kit for lighting and energy. Enditem
