Afghan authorities to check poppy cultivation, drug production in NE province

FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities are firm to check cultivation of opium poppy, drug-producing and trafficking in Badakhshan province, head of Counter-Narcotics department of the province, Qari Hafizullah Shafiqi said.

Talking to reporters on Saturday evening, the official claimed that poppy cultivation and its processing to the illicit drug has been drastically reduced in Badakhshan this year in comparison to last year.

"In comparison to last year the poppy cultivation and its processing to illicit drug has dropped down about 80 to 90 percent this year," said Shafiqi.

The official also asserted that poppy cultivation in several districts of the province including Darayem, Argo and Baharak has already been reduced to zero and efforts are underway to get the province utterly free of the menace.

The Taliban-run administration has vowed to fight against illegal activities including poppy product and trafficking as well as theft, robbery and any kind of lawlessness. Enditem
