LOS ANGELES, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Sony Pictures' superhero film "Morbius" led ticket sales at the North American box office with an estimated 39.1 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, according to studio figures released by measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.

Based on the Marvel Comics character Morbius, the vampire-infused film is a part of Sony's Marvel Universe.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa and starring Oscar winner Jared Leto in the title role, the film follows a scientist who attempts to cure himself of a rare blood disease and is determined to save others suffering his same fate, while a darkness inside him is also unleashed in a desperate gamble.

"Morbius" holds an approval rating of just 17 percent based on 186 reviews to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Movie audiences gave it a "C+" on CinemaScore.

Globally, the film is projected to take in 84 million dollars this weekend. Enditem
