MADRID, April 4 (Xinhua) -- La Liga strugglers Alaves on Monday sacked coach Jose Luis Mendilibar in the wake of their 4-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid.
That defeat, coupled with Levante's 2-0 win at home to Villarreal, leaves Alaves bottom of La Liga with 22 points from 30 matches and a goal difference of -22.
Former Eibar coach Mendilibar replaced Javier Calleja at the Vitoria-based club after the 18th round of matches, but his 12 games in charge have seen only one win, along with four draws and seven defeats.
The club announced Mendilibar's departure with a communique saying that he "arrived at the dugout at the end of December, with the aim of recovering a side that was in the relegation zone."
"Despite the efforts of the coach and the squad, the result has not been what was hoped for."
"Alaves have to do everything possible to avoid relegation and therefore the club has taken this always difficult decision with the conviction that salvation is possible."
The club's next game is a derby away to Osasuna on Sunday. Enditem
