231 inmates set free from Afghanistan's Kandahar jail

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Authorities released 231 detainees from the central jail in the southern Kandahar province on Tuesday, jail director Sayed Akhtar Mohammad Agha Hussaini said.

The inmates including 220 drug addicts and 11 criminals, according to the official, had been held for three to six months in the jail to get punishment and also medical treatment and all were set free following doctors advices and court's decision.

A total of 1,200 drug addicts have been held in the jail over the past seven months and set free after receiving medical treatment and rehabilitation, the official said. Enditem
