SUVA, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Fiji confirmed on Saturday four more deaths from leptospirosis in recent days, bringing the total deaths from the disease to 35 so far this year.

According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, Fiji's Permanent Secretary for Health James Fong said that all the new deaths, aged from 17 to 55, occurred in Lautoka, the second largest city in Fiji, between April 1 and April 4 this year.

There have been 1,638 lab-confirmed cases of leptospirosis so far this year in Fiji.

Meanwhile, Fiji has also reported 1,353 lab-confirmed cases of dengue fever and 93 lab-confirmed cases of typhoid this year, with five deaths from typhoid.

Fong attributed the rise of leptospirosis, dengue fever and typhoid cases to the consistently high levels of rainfall in recent months.

Fijians have been urged to take necessary measures to prevent themselves from being the victims of leptospirosis, dengue fever and typhoid.

The leptospirosis bacteria is spread to humans through the urine of infected animals, such as cows, pigs, rats and dogs. Enditem
