JERUSALEM, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Israel's internal security agency Shin Bet on Tuesday reinforced the security around Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and his family following a death threat, which the police are investigating.
The threat was made in a letter with a bullet inside that was addressed to Bennett and his family, the Shin Bet said in a statement, without elaborating.
An investigation has been launched and the Lahav 433 special police unit and Shin Bet are working on the case in tandem, the Israeli police also said in a statement.
A court issued a gag order on most of the details of the case until the investigation is concluded.
The PM's office confirmed in a statement that Bennett and his family received increased security following the threats.
Bennett said the threat was part of the heated political discourse in the country. "Political conflict, no matter how deep, should not reach violence, thuggery and death threats," he wrote on Twitter.
"We must lower the flames of the political discourse," he added.
It was not the first time that Bennett and other leaders of the ruling coalition have received death threats, mainly by far-right activists, according to the state-owned Kan TV news.
Bennett formed the coalition government last June after four rounds of elections in two years amid a political deadlock. The coalition includes Hawkish settlers and Dovish liberals who were untied to oust former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's longest-serving leader. Enditem
