BUJUMBURA, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye on Monday gave awards to outstanding workers and associations including a Chinese national, as the country was marking the International Workers' Day.

The international labor day was celebrated at Umuco stadium in the town of Muyinga in the province of Muyinga, northeast Burundi. The celebrations were characterized by folkloric dances including drummers, traditional dansers and a parade staged by workers.

"On a day like this, we have to acknowledge and congratulate people or organizations that have worked hard to contribute to the country's development," Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye told a crowd of people attending celebrations.

Most organizations and people that got the awards are active in the farming sector.

"A Chinese expert in rice farming is also among those who are doing great things for our country (Burundi)," said Ndayishimiye.

He praised Yang Huade, who said that 10 tons of rice can be harvested on a plantation of only one hectare, adding that Yang has contributed a lot to the rice research center of Gihanga in Bubanza province.

Ndayishimiye also indicated that Yang is also known in other places such as Karusi and Gitega where rice is grown, for assisting rice growers with his knowledge and techniques.

About 15 organizations or people received awards for their outstanding contributions to the east African country's development and each of them got a certificate of recognition and money.

Ndayishimiye advised civil servants to do farming projects that can be implemented after working hours and which will also help them during their retirement.

He called for hard work to boost the country's development.

The international labor day should have been celebrated on May 1, but it was on Sunday. In Burundi, celebrations were then postponed to Monday in accordance with the labor code. Enditem
