LUSAKA, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Zambia saw an increase in gender-based violence cases in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year, the police said on Tuesday.

The southern African nation recorded 6,915 cases during the first quarter of 2022, an increase of 2,661 from the 4,154 cases recorded during the same period last year, indicating a 62.5 percent increase.

Rae Hamoonga, the police spokesperson, said out of the total number recorded, 5,342 victims were females while 1,573 were males.

The police spokesperson said in a release that 19 victims of gender-based violence died during the period compared to five deaths recorded during the same period last year.

The police figures further show that most of the gender-based violence cases fell under the physical abuse category followed by economic abuse.

Meanwhile, police figures show that 1,769 children were abused during the first quarter of 2022 out of which 1,284 were girls and 485 were boys. Enditem
