JERUSALEM, May 19 (Xinhua) -- The Israel National Cyber Directorate (INCD) on Thursday warned retailers of ransomware attacks on cash registers' software.

The INCD said in a statement that it has recently identified attempts at such ransomware attacks, which prevent access to the software and demand payment for unlocking it.

In these attacks, the hackers target the software vendors that provide services to cash registers in stores, it added.

A message appears on the cash register's screen, looking like a real system message from the management interface, the INCD explained.

When the message is clicked, the malware will run, locking access to and preventing the operation of the register, it added.

The INCD has alerted register software providers and users to reset passwords, avoid clicking on suspicious messages and links, and make sure there are required protections, mainly two-step authentication and secure connection.

In 2021, Israel registered a total of 11,106 cyber incidents, up 22 percent year-on-year, according to an annual report released by the INCD a week ago. Enditem
