"Doctor Strange 2" tops North American box office for 3rd straight weekend

LOS ANGELES, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Disney's presentation of Marvel's superhero film "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" took the top spot at the North American box office for the third weekend in a row with a three-day estimate of 31.6 million U.S. dollars, according to studio figures released by measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.

The film has garnered 342.1 million dollars in ticket sales in North America for a global cume of 803.2 million dollars to date.

Based on Marvel Comics featuring the character Doctor Strange, the blockbuster is the sequel to 2016's "Doctor Strange." Directed by Sam Raimi, the film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the title role, along with Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Xochitl Gomez.

Focus Features' historical drama film "Downton Abbey: A New Era," the latest entry in the "Downton Abbey" franchise, opened in second place with 16 million dollars this weekend.

Rounding out the top three, DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures' animated film "The Bad Guys" took in 6.1 million dollars on its fifth weekend, pushing its North American total to 74.4 million dollars. Enditem
