BERLIN, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Former Bayern Munich coach Niko Kovac has returned to the Bundesliga after signing a three-year deal to become head coach of Wolfsburg, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old will be joined at the club by his brother and assistant coach Robert Kovac.

"I'm a child of the Bundesliga and I'm very excited and motivated to start another successful chapter with the Wolves," Kovac was quoted as saying on the club's official webpage.

The former Croatia international knows the Bundesliga well, having coached Eintracht Frankfurt from 2016 until 2018, clinching the German Cup in his last year with the Eagles. That same year, Kovac took the reins at record German champions Bayern Munich, where he was in charge from 2018 to 2019 and lifted the domestic double.

"It was not only important to me to find someone quickly, but above all to hire a coach who can develop Wolfsburg in the long term and bring it forward. Hence, I am very pleased that we were able to convince Niko of our path. He stands for consistent and success-oriented work," said Wolfsburg's executive manager Jorg Schmadtke.

Niko most recently coached French outfit AS Monaco, where he was sacked during the winter break with the team sixth in the table.

His new club Wolfsburg finished the 2021-22 Bundesliga season in 12th place and didn't qualify for any continental competition.

"The anticipation of making a difference and being successful together with my coaching staff in Wolfsburg is great. The team has enormous potential and the conditions for optimal and successful work are in place," said Kovac. Enditem
