BAMAKO, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Government troops killed 12 terrorists in a reconnaissance mission on Tuesday in central Mali, the Directorate of Information and Public Relations of the Armed Forces (Dirpa) has said.

The army also seized weapons, motorcycles and cash in the operation in the areas of Diallassagou and Diamweli, Dirpa said in a statement released Tuesday evening.

The operation came after the arrest of about 15 wanted terrorists between May 19 and 21 in the Timbuktu area in northern Mali, the statement said.

Between April 22 and May 6, around 60 terrorists were killed by government forces across the country, it said.

Mali has been grappling with security, political and economic challenges since 2012, buffeted by insurgencies, jihadist incursions and inter-community violence have left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands displaced in the west African country. Enditem
