ULAN BATOR, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Mongolian Health Minister Sereejav Enkhbold on Tuesday urged the public to quit all types of tobacco products on the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day.

"In recent years, the use of e-cigarettes has increased dramatically among our young people who want to chase trends and look good," Enkhbold said in a statement.

There is a common misconception that changing the ingredients of tobacco can reduce the harmful effects of tobacco, he said, adding that there is no scientific evidence that reducing nicotine levels in tobacco makes tobacco less harmful.

Mongolia imported a total of 2.055 billion pieces of cigarettes in 2018, and the number increased to 3.069 billion in 2021, said the minister.

The World No Tobacco Day is observed on May 31 every year around the world. The theme this year is "Tobacco is a threat to our environment."

"All types of tobacco products are harmful to health and the environment. Let's quit all forms of tobacco to protect our health and the environment," Enkhbold said.

In Mongolia, with a population of around 3.4 million, 43.7 percent of men and 5.3 percent of women smoke, while 14 percent of adolescents aged 13-15 smoke, according to the health ministry. Enditem
