BEIRUT, June 2 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) said Thursday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the municipality of Beirut to expand their existing partnership for the city's urban development.
According to a statement from UN-Habitat, the agreement will further allow the UN agency and the municipality of Beirut to work strategically on planning, coordinating resources, and developing a common expertise through shared experiences, to construct a sustainable urban future for the city of Beirut.
"It will put the municipality of Beirut on the roadmap of digitalization, so that we can better manage our assets and change the course of municipal work," said Beirut's Governor Marwan Abboud.
For his part, Beirut Mayor Jamal Itani said "following the Beirut Port explosion, the UN-Habitat team were and are still an integral part of our efforts to help the city recover. With this MoU being signed today, we will benefit more from the agency's global expertise," he added.
Taina Christiansen, head of UN-Habitat Lebanon, said that "we will be able to further promote transformative change in cities and human settlements through knowledge, policy advice, technical assistance and collaborative action to leave no one and no place behind," she said. Enditem
