Niger holds Uganda in AFCON 2023 qualifier

WAKISO, Uganda, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Uganda was on Wednesday held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Niger in a Group F match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Milton Karisa put Uganda ahead after 43 minutes of the game at the St. Mary's Stadium Kitende in the central Ugandan district of Wakiso.

Khalid Aucho and Fahad Bayo earlier also had their attempts stopped by Niger's goalkeeper Daouda Kassaly.

In the second half, the Niger team led by striker Victorien Zakari Adebayor and skipper Youssouf Oumarou pushed forward to try and get the goals but found the Ugandan defenders up to the task.

The Niger team did not give up and leveled matters after 71 minutes through Mahamadou Amadou Sabo.

The midfielder received a neat pass and beat one defender before he shot from outside the box into the top right corner to beat Uganda's goalkeeper Charles Lukwago.

Uganda, who lost the opening Group F match of the qualifiers 2-0 away to Algeria, remains at the bottom of the group, While Niger, who drew 1-1 with Tanzania in its first match, on second. Enditem
