RIO DE JANEIRO, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Flamengo appointed Dorival Junior as their new manager on Friday, a day after sacking Paulo Sousa.

Dorival rescinded his contract with Flamengo's Brazilian Serie A rivals Ceara to sign a deal with the Rio de Janeiro club that runs until December.

"He ... will take charge of the team for the Brazilian Serie A, Copa do Brasil and (Copa) Libertadores," read a statement on Flamengo's official website.

It will be the third time that the 60-year-old has managed Flamengo following a first spell from 2012 to 2013 and another stint in 2018.

Sousa was sacked just hours after Flamengo's 1-0 away loss to Bragantino, a result that left the club 14th in the 20-team top-flight standings.

The Portuguese coach led Flamengo to 19 wins, seven draws and six losses, having arrived in Rio last December following his departure from Poland's national team.

Flamengo's next match is a Brazilian Serie A fixture against Internacional in Porto Alegre on Saturday. Enditem
