JERUSALEM, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Euroleague basketball club Maccabi Tel Aviv has appointed its former star Oded Kattash as head coach in a two-year contract, the club announced in a statement on Sunday.

The 47-year-old played for Maccabi between 1995 and 1999, leading the club to four Israeli league titles.

The Israeli point guard then moved to Panathinaikos with which he won two Greek league championships and the 2000 Euroleague title after beating Maccabi in the final game, where he scored 17 points.

His playing career ended in 2001, at the age of 26, due to a serious injury.

Kattash also coached the Israeli national team between 2017 and 2021. In January last year, he was appointed head coach of Panathinaikos for half a season, and led the club to the Greek league and cup titles.

Between November 2018 and February 2022, Maccabi was coached by Greek Ioannis Sfairopoulos. The team's Israeli scout Avi Even then replaced him until the end of the season, which the club finished without any title.

"Let's face it, the team will have to make significant changes," Kattash said. "There are a lot of exciting things that are coming." Enditem
