TEHRAN, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Iran has sent two cargo planes carrying first aid supplies to Afghanistan following a deadly earthquake that hit the Afghan city of Khost earlier in the day, said the Iranian Embassy in Kabul on Wednesday.

The embassy extended its sympathy and condolences to Afghanistan over the tragic disaster, and regretted that the quake has caused heavy casualties in the country, according to its official Twitter account.

The embassy added it has taken other necessary measures to provide assistance to the neighboring country.

Some senior Iranian officials also expressed condolences to Afghanistan, pledging the Islamic republic's assistance and support for the disaster-stricken people in the country.

So far, the death toll from the 5.9-magnitude earthquake has surpassed 1,000, and more than 1,500 people were injured, an Afghan provincial official told Xinhua. Enditem
