ROME -- Italy's Cabinet of Ministers on Thursday approved a measure providing billions of euros in tax cuts and financing for natural gas as the government worked to reduce the economic impacts of surging fuel prices.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced the plan late Thursday after leaving the summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Spain. Draghi attended the first two days of the summit in Madrid, and was replaced on the final day by Italian Defense Minister Lorenzo Guerini. (Italy-Energy-Aid)

PRAGUE -- An informal European Union (EU) summit will be held in the Czech capital Prague on Oct. 6-7, European Council President Charles Michel and Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said after their meeting here on Thursday.

Michel, who visited Prague on the eve of the start of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU, said the Czech presidency comes at a "turning point" for Europe. (CZ-EU)

OTTAWA -- Canada's Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam on Thursday confirmed a total of 278 cases of monkeypox in the country as of June 29.

The cases had been reported nationally, including four cases from British Columbia, five from Alberta, 67 from Ontario and 202 from Quebec, the top doctor said. (Canada-Monkeypox)

JUBA -- The United Nations on Thursday expressed concern over the escalating communal violence in South Sudan which it said has left several people dead and others injured.

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for South Sudan Nicholas Haysom condemned the recent clashes in Eastern, Central Equatoria, Unity, Warrap, and Jongeli States, as well as the Abyei Administrative Area, which he said are communal violence sparked by community-based militia groups.
