SEOUL, July 20 (Xinhua) -- One man was confirmed dead and two others were seriously injured in a toxic gas leak accident that occurred in a South Korea's southeastern city, Yonhap news agency reported Wednesday citing police.

The accident happened at a water purification plant in Daegu, about 240 km southeast of the capital Seoul, around 9:45 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

One of the two workers, hired to clean a water storage tank, collapsed on the tank floor.

The worker, identified as a man in his 60s, was sent to a hospital but died of being poisoned with hydrogen cyanide, a highly lethal, colorless gas.

Two civil servants in their 30s and 50s fell on the tank floor while trying to rescue the worker. They were in critical condition.

The other worker survived as the man in his 50s barely escaped from the tank after finding his co-worker's collapse.

According to the firefighting authorities, 47 ppm of hydrogen cyanide was measured inside the tank at the time of rescue operations. The lethal dose of hydrogen cyanide is known to be 50 ppm. Enditem
