DAMASCUS, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and 12 others wounded after a rocket hit a congregation in Syria's central province of Hama, state news agency SANA reported.

The rocket, which was launched by "terrorists," struck a religious celebration to reopen the Hagia Sophia church in al-Sqailbiyeh city in western Hama, SANA reported, without giving further details.

The explosion occurred during the celebration that was attended by a Russian delegation, the war monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, without mentioning the number of casualties.

The attack comes a few days after the observatory reported that seven people had been killed by Russian airstrikes in the rebel-held northwestern province of Idlib near Hama.

The UK-based watchdog group said the victims were displaced people from Hama province. Enditem
