SYDNEY, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Taronga Western Plains Zoo Dubbo, located in the Australian state of New South Wales, has just publicly unveiled their latest habitat addition, three lion cubs, the result of a successful breeding program.

The zoo's lion supervisor Justine Powell said that it was a major milestone for the zoo's conservation program when the cubs were born in April as it was the first successful lion offspring since 2016.

"The now sixteen-week-old female cubs are all very healthy, putting on approximately 1 kg per week and transitioning well onto a meat diet," Powell said on Tuesday.

"Each of the cubs has very different personalities and we are loving observing more of that show as the cubs explore their habitat ... We're excited to show them to the public now, finally."

The zoo has invited the public to visit the new cubs and opened a naming competition for one third of the trio, as the other two are to be named by Taronga Foundation supporters.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo is run as a non-profit and has played an ongoing role in the conservation of both native and foreign endangered species.

Breeding programs have seen new additions to Regent Honeyeaters, the Greater Bilby, both endangered Australian species, and the critically endangered Black Rhinoceros. Enditem
