KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, July 28 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were killed and four others sustained injuries in the latest heavy rainfall and flooding in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province, the provincial government said Thursday.

Flash floods occurred late on Wednesday night after heavy rains swept away scores of houses, killing the eight people including women and children and injuring four others in the Spin Boldak, Zhari and Arghandab districts, it said in a statement.

Helicopters have been dispatched to the flood-affected areas to evacuate the wounded and ship humanitarian supplies to the affected areas, according to the statement.

Monsoon rains and flooding have reportedly claimed lives and displaced families in at least 10 out of the Asian country's 34 provinces over the past one month. Enditem
