Earthquake in northern Chile causes one injury, landslides, structural damage

SANTIAGO, July 28 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 shook Chile's Antofagasta region early Thursday morning, leaving one person injured, as well as landslides and minor structural damage, the Ministry of Interior and Public Security reported.

The quake was registered at 12:15 a.m. local time (04:15 GMT), 21 km northwest of Tocopilla, which is over 1,200 km north of the Chilean capital Santiago.

According to the ministry's National Emergency Office report, the tremor injured one person in Tocopilla and caused connectivity problems due to landslides, minor structural damage to the police station, while in Calama, another Antofagasta commune, electricity was disrupted.

The Tocopilla municipality announced the suspension of school classes as a preventive measure while roads are cleaned and electrical cables repaired.
