BERLIN, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Second division outfit Eintracht Braunschweig came from behind twice to beat top-flight Hertha Berlin 6-5 (4-4) on penalties in the first round of the DFB Cup on Sunday.

Hertha caught a perfect start on the road and broke the deadlock with ten minutes played when Marwin Plattenhardt's pinpoint cross into the box allowed Davie Selke to nod home from close range.

The capital club remained on the front foot but still had to wait until the 42nd minute before Myziane Maolida benefitted from Dodi Lukebakio's good build-up work to double the advantage.

Berlin dominated but missed the chance to kill the game at the hour mark as Dedryck Boyata couldn't beat Braunschweig's goalkeeper Jasmin Fejzic from a promising position.

Braunschweig then flabbergasted the visitors against the run of the play with two goals in quick succession as Brian Behrendt converted a foul play penalty in the 63rd minute before joker Lion Lauberbach tapped home a cutback pass from Jan-Hendrik Marx to level the scores three minutes later.

The second division outfit turned the tides in the overtime when Immanuel Pherai utilized Lauberbach's assist to make it 3-2 on the scoreboards.

Hertha responded in style and came from behind as Lucas Tousart made it three all with a deflected long-range hammer before Lukebakio chipped the ball over onrushing Fejzic to give the visitors the 4-3 lead.

Braunschweig had the last laugh though as the second division club equalized the scores in the dying minutes of the game when Bryan Hennig drilled the ball past Oliver Christensen from the edge of the box.

Plattenhardt and Marc Oliver Kempf missed their attempts in the penalty shoot-out whereas Hennig kept his nerves from the spot to secure Braunschweig's ticket for the 2nd round in the DFB Cup.

"We controlled the proceedings on the pitch until the hour mark, but we failed to put the game to bed. The penalty shoot-out is always a game of pure chance," said Hertha Berlin head coach Sandro Schwarz. Enditem
