PHNOM PENH, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A passenger aircraft of Vietnam's Bamboo Airways touched down at the Siem Reap International Airport in Cambodia on Sunday evening, marking the airline's first flight from Hanoi to Siem Reap, according to a news release from Cambodia Airports on Monday.

The airline has used a modern Embraer-190 aircraft to operate on this new route, the news release said.

Siem Reap International Airport started witnessing the return of international flights from December 2021 after a 20-month hiatus resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts on air travel.

The airport currently accommodates routes from/to Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hanoi, and two domestic liaisons.

The new service connecting Hanoi and Siem Reap will be conducive to restoring point to point travel between two of Asia's most appealing cities known for their rich heritage and "douceur de vivre" (sweetness of living), the news release said.

Thach Pierre Hoang, deputy chief commercial officer of Bamboo Airways said this first nonstop Hanoi-Siem Reap flight is the airways' next effort in its journey of expanding international presence.

"We expect our new Vietnam-Cambodia route will fulfill its crucial role as an aviation bridge and make a substantial contribution to the development of both countries in all aspects such as tourism, economy, and culture," he said.

Stephen King, chief commercial officer at Cambodia Airports, the company that operates Cambodia's three international airports, said in this challenging time, it is a breakthrough to welcome a new carrier.

"This is a further sign of the rebuilding of tourism after the successful vaccination campaign led by Cambodian authorities and subsequent reopening of the kingdom's borders," he said.

Located in northwestern Cambodia, Siem Reap province is home to the famed Angkor Archeological Park, which is the kingdom's most popular tourist destination. Enditem
