PHNOM PENH, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese woman and Cambodian man won the seventh Khmer Empire Marathon at the Angkor Archeological Park in northwest Cambodia's Siem Reap province on Sunday, according to results released by the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) on Monday.

The women's 42km race was won by Chinese runner Elaine Lee from China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, who crossed the finish line in three hours, 37 minutes and 19 seconds, while the men's race was won by Cambodian runner Sam Rachna, who finished in the time of 3:26:12.

NOCC secretary-general Vath Chamroeun said a total of 2,100 people including some 360 foreigners from 40 countries and regions took part in this year's event after two years of suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The event was part of the Ministry of Tourism's strategy for attracting tourists to Cambodia," he said.

The competition featured four categories: full marathon (42km), half marathon (21km), 10km race and a 3km fun run.

The Angkor Archeological Park was inscribed on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1992.

During the pre-pandemic era, the Angkor received up to 2.2 million international visitors in 2019, generating 99 million U.S. dollars in revenue from ticket sales, according to the state-owned Angkor Enterprise. Enditem
