First case of infection with omicron BA.5 coronavirus strain detected in Belarus

MINSK, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- The first case of infection with the Omicron BA.5 coronavirus strain has been confirmed in Minsk, local media reported on Tuesday.

Currently, the strain is most prevalent in the United States and Western Europe. In response to the Minsk case, the Ministry of Health of Belarus has launched a vaccination campaign for children aged five and older.

As of July 1, Belarus had recorded 994,037 COVID-19 infections and 7,118 deaths. No statistics have been released since. Enditem
