FREETOWN, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- A nationwide protest broke out in Sierra Leone Wednesday with protesters calling on the government to resolve the issue of economic hardship and the high cost of living in the West African country.

In the capital city Freetown, clashes between the police and protesters were seen on the streets on Wednesday as witnesses said the police were firing tear gas canisters to disperse protesters.

The protest has disrupted businesses with shops across the capital city remaining closed for fear of being attacked by protesters.

The government has invoked the military to work alongside the police to react to the protest in the country. Enditem
